The President, Providence Research and Vice-President, Research and Academic Affairs, PHC, directs Providence Research, the Research Leaders Committee, participates on Providence Research Boards (Medical, Innovation, Research & Academic Committee), represents the research institute publicly and at the University of British Columbia (UBC), and seeks funding and partnership opportunities. The Providence Research’s President is a Senior Leader at PHC, responsible for ongoing development of research/academic programs and partnerships for PHC.

Operations
Providence Research Operations manage day-to-day operations at Providence Research and oversees strategic and long-term planning. Liaises with research centres, Clinical Academic Research Groups, and academic partners to ensure alignment to create a seamless research process – from start to finish. Oversees Providence Research teams to support and enable research excellence across Providence Health Care. Under the Director of Operations, our office is available to help the Providence Research community with contracts and grants, ethics, finance, human resources, and communication.

Contracts
Negotiates and manages all industry-sponsored research agreements, as well as agreements with government and other academic institutions; coordinates with UBC University-Industry Liaison Office’s Sponsored Research Group (UILO); responds to clinical trial agreement inquiries; liaises between UBC, UILO, and Providence Research; provides support to the Clinical Trials Network Group (CTN) and coordinates educational workshops for clinical coordinators and hospital staff.

Facilitates grant applications and assists in obtaining institutional signatures; coordinates and manages institutional applications (e.g., CFI, MSFHR) and internal award competitions; maintains institutional research statistics and identifies funding opportunities.

Communications
Informs and makes aware, internal and external audiences, of the important and vital scientific research undertaken at Providence Research. The department’s mandate is to broadcast our research centres’ and departments’ achievements and educational events to the PHC community, public, and the life science ecosystem, which includes; media, provincial health authorities, research institutes, and academic institutions.

Research Ethics
The Research Ethics Boards Administration (REBA) oversees management of the UBC-PHC Research Ethics Board; pre-reviews all research applications for compliance with applicable research ethics regulations and guidelines; administers and communicates REB decisions to the research community; responds to inquiries on applications and ethical issues; advises researchers on regulatory and Tri- Council Policy Statement (TCPS2) requirements for conducting research involving humans, as well as, specific UBC policies, standards, and requirements.

Finance
Finance provides financial accountability of research funds held in trust at Providence Research. This includes new trust account set up, accounts payable, accounts receivable and regular financial updates for research trust account holders.

Human Resources
Human Resources provides support to the researchers at St. Paul’s Hospital. This includes the HR lifecycle of on-boarding, hiring, management of employees, performance reviews, terminations, and recruitment. All independent contractors and employees of the Clinical Academic Research Groups paid with funds held in research trust accounts will have contracts set up by the Providence Research HR team.

Strategy and Special Projects
Strategy and Special Projects works collaboratively to provide key strategic leadership and project management in the planning, development, communication and deployment of the corporate strategic plan throughout the organization. This includes ensuring alignment and integration between the strategic and operational plans at all levels of the organization and across all research groups. In addition, oversees the monitoring, measuring and reporting of organizational progress on the strategic plan goals and annual key achievement milestones as well as, various other special projects as they arise.

Providence Health Innovation works to support a new generation of knowledge, health solutions, and their application to real-world settings as quickly and seamlessly as possible. The PHIR+E team collaborates with the Providence clinical, research and broader community and serves as the innovation arm of Providence Research.
