Quality Showcase: Celebrating the Unwavering Commitment of Physicians and Staff to Improving Patient Care at PHC

This past year marked the inaugural “Celebrating Quality Improvement at PHC” event. Held virtually, this event provided an opportunity for physicians and staff to share and celebrate their quality improvement (QI) work with each other, with patient partners, and with nonclinical PHC leadership.

Led by Dr. Adrienne Melck and the Exceptional Quality, Safety and Value Physician Advisory Committee (PAC), this quality showcase event featured presentations by physicians and staff on a selection of impressive QI initiatives across PHC over the previous year. Attendees, including 3 patient partners, also voted on a People’s Choice Award winner.

Initiatives ranged from enhancing trauma informed care in the Gastrointestinal (GI) Clinic at St. Paul’s Hospital to improving intra-team communication within the Department of Palliative Care. Faced with changing clinical realities stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, physicians and staff led initiatives to improve infection control, integrate virtual care, and adapt in-person supports for patients, including launching a new outdoor exercise program for patients of the Elder Care Clinic at St. Paul’s Hospital.

The 2021 People’s Choice Award went to the Department of Audiology team (pictured) who developed the technology to re-program cochlear implants remotely to keep patients closer to home. Demand for this service has continued to grow since the start of the program in December 2020.

Stay tuned in the coming months for more information about the 2022 quality showcase event to honour our colleagues’ QI work.
