Dr. John Webb honoured for advancing interventional cardiovascular medicine
A St. Paul’s Hospital doctor has been recognized for advancing the field of interventional cardiovascular medicine through technical excellence and innovation. Dr. John Webb, the Director of Interventional Cardiology at SPH and Director of the Centre for Heart Valve Innovation, received the prestigious Geoffrey O. Hartzler Master Operator Award in San Diego recently at Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) 2018 – an annual educational symposium sponsored by the Cardiovascular Research Foundation (CRF).
The following is an excerpt from the CRF website announcing Dr. Webb’s win:
A leading researcher, innovator, and mentor, Dr. John Webb’s work in minimally invasive surgical devices and procedures for treating structural heart disease has significantly impacted the lives of countless patients. He leads a group credited with many transcatheter firsts, including the development of successful transarterial aortic valve implantation, valve implantation for failed surgical valves, and various mitral and tricuspid repair and implantation procedures, with over 500 publications and experience teaching valve procedures in over 25 countries.
Dr. Webb is currently Director of Interventional Cardiology at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, the McLeod Professor of Heart Valve Innovation at the University of British Columbia, and Medical Director of the Transcatheter Valve Program for the Province of British Columbia. He also serves as Director, Centre for Heart Valve Innovation at St. Paul’s Hospital and Clinical Lead, BC Centre for Improved Cardiovascular Health.
Dr. Webb received a Bachelor of Science degree from Simon Fraser University and completed his medical degree from the University of British Columbia. In the years following, he spent his internship at the University of Toronto and residency at the University of British Columbia. He completed his cardiology fellowship at the University of Toronto and spent two years at the University of California, San Francisco as a Canadian Heart Association Fellow, focusing on interventional cardiology. He is an associate editor of JACC: Cardiovascular Interventions and serves on the editorial boards of the Canadian Journal of Cardiology, Catheterization and Cardiovascular Intervention, Circulation: Cardiovascular Interventions, and Structural Heart: The Journal of the Heart Team.
