PHC Researchers and Trainees awarded 2017 MSFHR Scholar and Trainee Awards

PHC researchers received funding awards from the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research (MSFHR) through their 2017 Scholar Award program and their 2017 Research Trainee Award program.

The MSFHR Scholar award supports early career researchers in BC as they establish their individual careers in research and develops research programs with their own research teams. Of the 20 Scholar Awards given, six awards went to PHC’s researchers, one of which was co-funded with PHC Research Institute and one with St. Paul’s Foundation:

  • Liam Brunham from the Centre for Heart Lung Innovation (HLI)
    Project title: Cardiovascular genetics: Phenotypes, genotypes and cellular mechanisms
  • Nadia Fairbairn from the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS (BC-CfE)
    Project title: Opioid addiction research program to improve prescribing practices and reduce overdose (Co-funded with St. Paul's Foundation)
  • Danya Fast from BC-CfE
    Project title: Examining the addiction treatment and recovery trajectories of youth in British Columbia's Lower Mainland
  • Mark Harrison from the Centre for Health Evaluation and Outcome Sciences (CHEOS)
    Project title: Incentivizing the delivery of sustainable care of chronic diseases in Canada: Case studies in musculoskeletal disease (Co-funded with Providence Health Care Research Institute)
  • Rod Knight from the BC-CfE
    Project title: Improving substance use treatment trajectories for men who have sex with men
  • Kanna Hayashi from BC-CfE
    Project title: Innovative addiction research program: Addressing polysubstance use
  • Lianping Ti from BC-CfE
    Project title: Responding to the dual epidemics of Hepatitis C and addiction in British Columbia

The MSFHR Research Trainee award supports trainees to develop their career in BC’s health research landscape. Of the 33 research trainees selected, three train at PHC. Recipients include:

  • Alex Leung from HLI
    Project title: The role of PCSK9 in the clearance of bacterial lipids and the development of anti-PCSK9 treatment for sepsis
  • Yannick Molgat-Seon from HLI
    Project title: Investigating the role of skeletal muscle dysfunction on dyspnea and exercise intolerance in interstitial lung disease
  • Amrit Singh from the Prevention of Organ Failure (PROOF) Centre of Excellence
    Project title: Development and validation of blood-based biomarkers for improved heart failure management
